Chu Fo-nien
竺仏念 (n.d.) (PY Zhu Fonian; Jpn Jiku-butsunen)
A Chinese priest who was active as a translator from the latter part of the fourth century through the early fifth century. A native of Liang-chou, Chu Fo-nien assisted Samghabhuti and Dharmanandi in the Chinese translation of Buddhist scriptures in Ch'ang-an. Dharmanandi and Chu Fo-nien produced the Chinese version of the Increasing by One Agama Sutra and the Medium-Length Agama Sutra. Later, Chu Fo-nien by himself produced Chinese translations of several other scriptures including the Sutra of Verses and the Jeweled Necklace Sutra. He was widely admired for his excellent translations. He is said to have recited from memory many sutras and to have also been versed in non-Buddhist scriptures.
