seven groups of disciples (七眾).
The five monastic groups are
  bhikṣus (monks),
  bhikṣuṇīs (nuns),
  śrāmaṇeras (novice monks),
  śrāmaṇerikās (novice nuns),
  śikṣamāṇās (novice nuns in their last two years before ordination).

The two lay groups are
  upāsakas (laymen) and
  upāsikās (laywomen).
