Evgueni A. Tortchinov

Evgeny Torchinov (Russian Евгений Алексеевич Торчинов ) was a sinologist, buddhologist, professor, and translator.

He is best known as an eminent Russian researcher of ancient Chinese religion and philosophy, author of many books and translations of classical [[Chinese texts (especially, Buddhist and Taoist) into Russian. He founded the chair of Eastern philosophy and cultures at St. Petersburg State University.

Life and career

Evgeny Torchinov was born on August 22, 1956 in Ordzhonikidze (then USSR), and soon his family moved to Saratov.

After graduation from high-school in 1973, Torchinov is admitted to St. Peterburg State University, East Studies Department, where he majors in Chinese philology.

After graduation in 1978, becomes a Ph.D. candidate at the State museum of history of religion and atheism, where works as research fellow 1981-1984. Since 1984 and until 1994, worked as researcher in St.Peterburg branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences.

In 1994 he defends his second doctoral degree titled "Taoism:

An attempt of historico-religios description". In 1998 becomes the Chair of Philosophy of Religion and Religious Studies at St. Pereburg State University, and in 1999 creates and leads the chair of Oriental Philosophy and Cultures.

Torchinov also worked as a visiting professor at University of Sascatoon, Canada. He died on July 12, 2003, in St. Peterburg.

1985 – candidate of historical sciences (equivalent of Ph.D.), thesis theme: "Ge Hong's "Baopu-zi" as Historical and Ethnological Source".
1994 – doctor of philosophical sciences (equivalent to D.Sc.). Thesis theme: "Daoism. An Essay of Historico-religious Description"
Since 1994 until now – associate professor (since 1996 – professor) of the Faculty of Philosophy of St. Petersburg State University
1998 – temporary head of the Department of Religious Studies of the same Faculty
1999 - Departament of Oriental Philosophy and Cultural Studies(Faculty of Philosophy)-chair

Since 1980 he published about 90 articles on different aspects of the history of religious and philosophical doctrines in China and on the problems of religious studies in general. The most important are (in Russian) :
