The Flower Garland Sutra says:

"Bodhisattvas inspire ten states of mind towards living beings:

  1. Looking out for their benefit
  2. Offering greatness of compassion
  3. Offering comfort and contentment
  4. Offering safety and security
  5. Offering empathy
  6. Being inclusive and accepting
  7. Being protective
  8. Offering fellowship
  9. Considering them as teachers
  10. Considering them as guides

Bodhisattvas are encouraged to study these ten things

  1. Reciting, learning, and listening
  2. Being a sanctuary of serenity and stillness
  3. Being close to good spiritual acquaintances
  4. Gentle, pleasing speech
  5. Language appropriate to the occasion
  6. Fearlessness of heart
  7. Thoroughly understanding the significance of all things
  8. Cultivating one’s practice according to the teaching
  9. Avoiding foolishness and stupidity
  10. Being steadfast and secure

This is to make Bodhisattvas increase their greatness of compassion towards living beings so that they grasp what they hear without having to depend upon others to explain it."
