Most Secret Hayagriva is a wrathful aspect of Chenrezig or (Guan Yin) who manifests as a highest yoga tantra deity. The practice originated from a set of eight hidden treasures known as the Eight Pronouncements, a series of main deity practices of the Nyingma lineage which were revealed to eight Indian masters. The treasure that contained the practice of Most Secret Hayagriva was revealed to the great Indian scholar Nagarjuna. Through Guru Padmasambhava, the lineage of Most Secret Hayagriva was brought to Tibet.

Most Secret Hayagriva came to be of particular significance to the Sera Je Monastery in central Tibet. The founder of the monastery, Kunkyen Lodrö Rinchen Sengge, was a close disciple of Lama Tsong Khapa who established the Gelug tradition. Kunkyen Lodrö Rinchen Sengge received the entire lineage of Most Secret Hayagriva from his father, a Nyingma lama, fulfilling the latter’s dying wish that he preserve and uphold the practice of Hayagriva.

An account is given of how Kunkyen Lodrö Rinchen Sengge was scouting for a new place to build a monastery and came upon a cemetery with a thorn bush in it. He saw a red raven fly to that thorn bush and disappear into it. A vision of the entire mandala and deity of Hayagriva then appeared to him where the bush stood. Taking heed of these auspicious signs, Kunkyen Lodrö Rinchen Sengge proceeded to build the first temple of [[Ser] Je Monastery]] on that very site.

600 years later, Most Secret Hayagriva remains the special protector deity of Sera Je with the lineage fully preserved by monks at Sera Je in Tibet as well as at its re-established seat in south India.

Praying to Most Secret Hayagriva is a swift and powerful means to overcome negative forces and obstacles including those caused by spirit harms. Prayers to the deity are especially beneficial in these degenerate times when sufferings and illnesses are rampant due to the strong delusions of sentient beings, and when it is essential to cultivate compassion in the face of negativity.

he Most Secret Hayagriva puja is a unique event at ABC which we conduct in accordance with its lineage. This stems from the connection established through our founders, Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, who were both from Sera Je Monastery. The puja has developed into an anticipated annual event on our calendar, appreciated by our members and benefactors for its precious benefits.

The Most Secret Hayagriva puja is extremely powerful against obstacles created by nagas—such as cancer, leprosy and skin diseases—and landlord spirits which manifest as paralysis or spirit harm. It also works against epilepsy which is connected to spirit harm. Relying on this practice provides the antidote to dispel the negative karma that produced these illnesses.

It is a ceremonious and lively puja where extensive confession practice is done and an array of offerings is laid out. Besides the usual offerings of flowers, incense, lights and food, there is an elaborate presentation of numerous decorative tormas ([[ritual[offering cakes]]), medicinal nectar bowls and tsog offerings. The prayers include offerings and requests made to various Dharma protectors for their swift enlightened activity.
