ancestral records (soroku 祖録)
"Records" (roku 録) of the sayings and doings of any "ancestor" (so 祖) in the Zen lineage. These include
(1) the collected biographies of Zen masters found in "records of the transmission of the flame" (dentō roku 傳燈録),
(2) the discourse records (goroku 語録) of individual Zen masters, and
(3) koan collections that draw their root cases (honsoku 本則) from the two aforementioned genres.
