Doji
道慈 (d. 744)
A priest of the Three Treatises (Sanron) school in Japan. He learned the Three Treatises doctrine from Chizo of Horyu-ji temple and the Dharma Characteristics (Hosso) doctrine from Gien of Ryumon-ji temple. In 702 he went to China and studied the Three Treatises teaching under Yüan-k'ang, and Esoteric Buddhism under Shanwuwei (Skt Shubhakarasimha). After returning to Japan in 718, Doji lived at Daian-ji temple and taught the Three Treatises teaching. This is known as the third transmission of the Three Treatises doctrine to Japan.
