Shobo
聖宝 (832–909)

The priest who is recognized as the precursor of the Ono branch of the True Word (Shingon) school in Japan. In 847 he entered the priesthood under Kobo's disciple Shinga, and later he studied the Three Treatises (Sanron), Flower Garland (Kegon), and Consciousness-Only doctrines. Thereafter he engaged in the practice of the esoteric teachings and in 876 founded Daigo-ji temple. After Shinga's death, he practiced the esoteric teachings under Shinnen and Gennin and thus distinguished himself among the community of the True Word school. In the lineage of Shobo, Ningai (951-1046) later established the Ono school, so called because Ningai founded Mandara-ji temple in Ono of Kyoto and based his activities there.
