Kailash is actually indian word and tibetans used to called it Kangrenpoche or kangkartesi which means the “precious jewel of snow”. Why it is so called because during hot summer time, the snows around the surrounding mountains will meltout and it is only mount kailash that covers with snow for whole year. From the buddhist point of view, mount kailash is very holy mountain for the Tibetans. It has so many interesting stories in buddhist like “milarepa”(one of the master who is believed to enlightened in one life) had stayed and meditate there for longtime and also you can seen many common caves there. It is believe that Godess White Tara had first initiated the circumambulating circuit for the local Tibetan people because nobody at that time knows the circuit. That's why there is a pass with altitude of 5630m called Dolma-la pass which was termed after godess Tara(Dolma in Tibetan). One most interesting thing is that there is a battle between gods and demons because of mount kailash. The demons want to take mount kailash to their places by using ropes and gods want to take mount kailash to heaven. It is Milarepa who stops the battle between gods and demons. “he said to them that mount kailash is neither belongs to god nor to demons. Mount kailash belongs to human kind only. That's why mount kailash is really important and holy pilgrimage site for Tibetans. Now a days, we can see a ring like shape on the top parts of mount kailash. This is because of the shape of rope printed during battle between god and demons.

The festival of Saga Dawa marks the enlightenment of sakyamuni, and occurs on the full moon day of the fourth Tibetan month. Saga dawa is particularly popular time to visit mount kailash as Tibetan from every parts of tibet gether in Darchen for the preparation of their circumambling around mount kailash. Tibetans believe that more the number of circulation around the kailash earns more merits in life.
