exoteric Buddhism; (xian): The fundamental theories and doctrines that were taught openly by the Buddha. The Theravadan Sects of Southeast Asia and the Pure Land and Zen Sects of China, Korea, and Japan are all forms of exoteric Buddhism, as are the Tendai and Nichirin sects of Japan.
