Kufū ; Lit. a device, sometimes used as a synonym for Kōan (q.v.).

The ‘spiritual birth-pangs’ (Suzuki) of seeking a way out of the blind alley created by thought.

It is seeking to pass through a narrow gate by dropping the self which cannot get through the opening.

See Suzuki, Zen and Japanese Culture, p. 178.
