Treatise on the Source of Wisdom, The
阿毘達磨発智論 (Skt Abhi-dharma-jnanaprasthana-shastra; Chin A-p’i-ta-mo-fa-chih-lun; Jpn Abida-tsuma-hotchi-ron )

A principal abhidharma, or doctrinal text, of the Sarvastivada school, translated into Chinese by Hsüan-tsang between 657 and 660. Katyayaniputra authored this treatise in the second century B.C.E. Around that time, the Sarvastivada school had seven doctrinal texts, among which The Treatise on the Source of Wisdom was primary. The treatise contributed greatly to the development of Sarvastivada thought, and was the focus of many doctrinal studies, which in turn produced other important abhidharma works such as The Great Commentary on the Abhidharma and The Dharma Analysis Treasury. In addition to Hsüan-tsang's translation, there exists one other Chinese version of this work, titled The Eight-part Treatise, translated in 383 by Samghadeva and Chu Fo-nien.
