Ten Divisions of Monastic Rules, The [［十誦律］] (Chin Shih-sung-lü; Jpn Jūju-ritsu): The text of the vinaya, rules of monastic discipline, of the Sarvāstivāda school; Punyatāra and Kumārajīva translated it from Sanskrit into Chinese in the early fifth century. Punyatāra died before completing the translation, and Kumārajīva finished translating the remaining portion with Dharmaruchi. The text consists of ten sections enumerating and explaining monastic regulations, hence the title The Ten Divisions of Monastic Rules. The Sanskrit work is not extant in its entirety, but many fragments have been discovered. In China, the study of The Fourfold Rules of Discipline, a more concise text, took precedence over that of The Ten Divisions of Monastic Rules.
