Kāshyapa
Kāshyapa (Skt) (1) 迦葉菩薩 (Jpn Kashō-bosatsu): A bodhisattva who appears in the Mahāparinirvāna Sutra to whom Shakyamuni Buddha addresses the “Bodhisattva Kāshyapa” chapter of that sutra and who, in the sutra, asks Shakyamuni thirty-six questions.
(2) 迦葉仏 (Jpn Kashō-butsu): According to the Long Āgama Sutra and others, the sixth of the seven Buddhas of the past, the seventh and last of whom is Shakyamuni. The Wise Kalpa Sutra lists the names of a thousand Buddhas appearing in the present Wise Kalpa and describes Kāshyapa Buddha as the third of them. According to the Mahāparinirvāna Sutra, the monk Realization of Virtue, who upheld the correct teaching, was reborn as Kāshyapa Buddha, and the king Possessor of Virtue, who was killed defending him, was reborn as Shakyamuni.
