eight phases of a Buddha's existence
八相・八相成道・八相作仏 ( Jpn hasso, hasso-jodo, or hasso-sabutsu )
Eight successive phases that a Buddha is said to manifest when appearing in the world in order to save people. They are;
(1) descending from heaven,
(2) entering the mother's womb,
(3) emerging from the mother's womb,
(4) renouncing the secular world,
(5) conquering devils,
(6) attaining enlightenment,
(7) turning the wheel of the Law, and
(8) entering nirvana.
