Kadhampa Buddhist Society of Australia Inc.
The Kadhampa Buddhist Society of Australia is a part of a worldwide network of more than 20 centres including New Zealand, Hawaii, United States, Honk Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Nepal and Indonesia. We are a charitable organisation focused on propagating Buddhist culture, heritage and teachings of love, compassion, and wisdom. The Kadhampa Tradition
The Kadhampa tradition is a Tibetan Mahayana Buddhist school founded by Dromtonpa, a Tibetan lay master and the foremost disciple of the great Indian Buddhist Master Atisha (982 – 1054). Dromtonpa passed three lineages of practice to his disciples that continue till today. The Kadhampas are famous and respected for our proper and earnest Dharma practice. The most evident teachings of that tradition are the teachings on the Bodhicitta (the will to attain complete enlightenment in order to be of benefit to all sentient beings) and the teachings of the path to enlightenment (‘A Lamp for the Path’ written by Atisha).
What services do we provide?
We offer a wide range of activities and events for people at different levels of practice and interest. Events vary from teachings, chanting, meditation, guru puja, candle offering, qigong and more.
Meditation / Qigong Classes
When you focus your mind, you concentrate better, when you concentrate better, you can accomplish more. Whatever you do, you do it more effectively when you meditate. This attitude of paying attention can help transform everything we do into a form of meditation. Qigong exercise gently incorporates the mind, breathing and body to help cultivate and promote circulation of ‘qi or ‘life force’ within the human body. It offers excellent benefits to physical and mental well-beings and can be practiced by everyone regardless of age. It is especially helpful in reducing stress-related ailments.
‘In Conversation with a Monk’
Do you have a question about Buddhism or want to learn about a Buddhist perspective on life? No matter what your question is this conversation is a perfect opportunity to open up a topic of your choice. Each month participants choose a subject and have a informal gathering and chat with our resident abbot. Come and join us this month!
Buddhism for Beginners
This course is aimed at people who would like a more structured understanding of Buddhism. Key Buddhist concepts such as ‘reincarnation’, ‘karma’ and ‘impermanence’ are discussed in each class followed by discussions, questions and answers.
Advanced Buddhism
This is a course designed for those seeking advance understanding of Buddhism. The key Buddhist literature used in this class is the ‘Lam Rim’ or ‘The Great treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment’. This is a text written by Je Tsongkhapa, a great Tibetan Buddhist scholar in the 14th century. This is a treasured text because like a road map, it spells out the steps in the journey towards enlightenment.
Our Objectives
- To practise and proclaim the teachings of the Buddha so that sentient beings, regardless of race, gender and political affiliation, can be liberated from the suffering that manifests in individuals, relationships, institutions and social systems
- To nurture followers in their pursuit of enlightenment through providing opportunities for Buddhist teaching, meditation, worship, retreats and the researching and publishing of religious books
- To foster a spirit of fellowship, co-operation and goodwill among all religions and cultures and represent the Buddhist perspective on social and ethical matters in inter-faith forums, education programs and in spheres where humanitarian, environmental and social justice issues are discussed
- To build solidarity with people disadvantaged by society’s political, social and economic arrangements
- To provide compassionate support and services for the direct relief of poverty, sickness, suffering, distress, misfortune, disability or helplessness in Australia and overseas
- To facilitate dealings with government, the private sector, other organisations, the media and the public in general to further Buddhist ideals of unity and peace.

- Prior to 2010, Badriya Lee had been very much involved in studying and meditating according to the Theravada school of Buddhism. Later, he received Empowerments of “Chenrezig", "Shakyamuni Buddha" as well as "Manjushri" from His Holiness the 18th Dromtug Rinpoche on 21 and 22 March 2010. That marked his turning-point towards Mahayana Buddhism. He developed great interest in Mahayana Buddhism through reading extensively on Buddhist texts written by re-known Mahayana scholars. Being an accountant by profession, Badriya is always looking out for new ways to bring the Buddha’s precious teachings across to anyone who may be interested. He is very skilful at propagating Buddhadharma through Microsoft power-point presentations, and also preparing / drawing up tables, charts, diagrams and process flowcharts (as per Teaching web page) to make it easier for people to follow. By the late 2010s, Badriya has been assisting H.E. Gontug Rinpoche in conducting weekly Dharma classes to the public at the Kadhampa Society's premise. He has also shared his wide knowledge of Buddhism in a "Talk" at the Monash Interfaith Gathering in August 2011. Together with H.E. Gontug Rinpoche, they have travelled abroad to conduct Dharma classes in Malaysia and Singapore in April and May of 2012.
