Sutra of the Meditation to Behold the Buddhas
Sutra of the Meditation to Behold the Buddhas
[般舟三昧経] (Skt Pratyutpanna-buddha-sammukhavasthita-samadhi-sutra; Chin Pan-chou-san-mei-ching; Jpn Hanju-zammai-kyo )
A sutra translated into Chinese in 179 by Lokakshema, a monk from Central Asia. In it, Shakyamuni explains that by practicing "the meditation to behold the Buddhas" (Skt pratyutpanna-samadhi ) one can see Amida and all other Buddhas. This sutra belongs to the earliest period of Mahayana and is said to have been produced sometime from the first century B.C.E. through the first century C.E. It is one of the first sutras to mention Amida Buddha. Another translation of the same scripture is also attributed to Lokakshema, and there are two additional translations by other translators.
