Conscience ; Buddhism knows nothing of an ‘inner monitor’ implanted by deity as an infallible guide to right conduct. ‘Conscience’ is a quality of the mind resulting from past experience. One’s state of moral development depends on one’s response to experience in past lives, and in the present life. There is no absolute right and wrong; there is gradual growth towards the highest morality—utter unselfishness. (See Hiri, Sin.)
