I-Tsing ; Chinese scholar and pilgrim who, like Fa-Hsien and Hiuen-Tsiang before him, travelled through the Holy Places of Indian Bsm. and recorded what he found.

In 671 he left on his travels by sea to Sumatra, thence to Bengal and Magadha (q.v.).

He returned home in 695, having spent years in Sumatra translating his immense collection of Sk. MSS. into Chinese.

His account of his travels (The Buddhist Religion, trans. Takakusu, 1896) shows a further decline of Bsm. in India on the earlier records of Fa-Hsien and Hiuen Tsiang (q.v.).
