‘khrul pa - “Confusion”, “delusion”, “to be confused”.

Translation of the Sanskrit term "bhranti". The Tibetan term means that the mind has made a mistake in its perception of the situation. Used in a general sense when a creature is confused about something. Also used in the specific Buddhist sense of being in fundamental delusion due to the deluded activities of the rational mind. Thus, the term has two meanings, where one is a temporary uncertainty about something, and the second is a delusion on a more fundamental level.

1) The more general sense does imply confusion, i.e. that someone mistook (confused) one thing for another. In the Tibetan way of thinking, mistakes come from this way of thinking. Therefore, the common word for making a mistake is nor ‘khrul, where the word for making a mistake in the mind nor ba is paired with the word ‘khrul pa confusion. Literally, it means that a mental error has been made due to being deluded about something. Attention must be paid to the fact that although the term 'khrul pa is very close to "mistake", it is not really one, it is confusion about the situation that precedes the error.

2) A specific Buddhist definition, which is the fundamental feeling of confusion (delusion). Blo yis ma yin pa la yin pa ltar 'dzin pa "appearing to the rational mind that something exists when it does not exist" and corresponds to an instance of seeing an object such as a table as actually present while in fact, it is only present as a manifestation that has taken place in the process of rten 'brel of dependent arising.
