garbhakosa-dhatu the womb treasury,

Because the Buddha nature of all beings is covered with karmic defilements accumulated from countless lifetimes, we say they are hidden in the garbha-kosa (Skr. womb-sheath), which is likened to a foetus living inside the womb. Another way of referring to these beings is that they are the manifestations of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. The Avatamsaka Sutra speaks of every pore of Samantabhadra contains as many Buddha lands as atoms in infinite Buddha lands. Accordingly, all phenomena that Samantabhadra manifests are in a state of comprehensive non-obstruction.

In contrast to the garbha-kosa, there are those beings who have perfected their Buddha essence. They are in the Vajra-kosa sheath (Skr. Thunderbolt or Adamantine) and they manifest the virtue of Supreme Wisdom of the Bodhisattva Manjursri, which can, like a indestructible adamantine thunderbolt, cut through all obstacles and eliminate karmic defilements. Their perfected essence is vajra-like and indestructible. Both the Womb-sheath and the Vajra-sheath are Realms of Reality.
