Revelation of the Profound Secrets Sutra
[解深密経] (Skt Samdhinir-mochana-sutra; Chin Chieh-shen-mi-ching; Jpn Gejimmitsu-kyo)

Abbreviated as the Profound Secrets Sutra. A five-volume sutra translated into Chinese by Hsüan-tsang in 647. This sutra is the principal text of the Dharma Characteristics (Chin Fa-hsiang; Jpn Hosso) school. It is written in question-and-answer format and deals with such topics as the nature of the dharmas (phenomena), Consciousness-Only doctrine, and the alaya-consciousness. There are three Chinese translations in addition to the one by Hsüan-tsang: the five-volume version translated by Bodhiruchi in the early sixth century, and two abridged versions, the two-volume translation by Gunabhadra in the mid-fifth century and the one-volume translation by Paramartha in the latter part of the sixth century.
