8th Tai Situ Panchen Chökyi Jungné (1700-1774.jpg

The 8th Tai Situ Panchen Chökyi Jungné (1700-1774) founded Palpung, the principal monastery of the Kagyu order in Eastern Tibet. A renowned Sanskrit grammarian and editor of the scriptures, he was also famous for his paintings, of which it was written: “These magical creations that dazzle the mind of the beholder can even today become the nectar for the eyes of ordinary folk.” The presence of deities of long life in this Karma Gadri style painting indicates that this portrait thangka was painted in the 8th Tai Situ’s lifetime.
