Kukai (774-835) (Kobo Daishi): Traveled to China and became disciple of Huiguo (Hui-kuo) who taught him the esoteric Buddhism Zhenyan (Chen-yen Tsung) . Established the Shingon Sect of esoteric Buddhism in Japan at the beginning of the Heian period in the 9th century. Considered to be the founder of Japanese Buddhism.
