Welcome to Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey

Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey is a monastery and retreat centre devoted to the practice of meditation within the Serene Reflection Meditation Tradition of Buddhism (Sōtō Zen). The monastic community offers retreats, festivals and other events for anyone who wishes to learn about or deepen their practice of meditation, and to explore more fully its fundamental relevance in our daily lives. We have been here in Northern England for over fifty years.

Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey is part of a larger organisation; the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives.

Festival of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva
Jul 7 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

This festival celebrates and gives teaching on the Bodhisattva, Samantabhadra, the personification of patient, worthy and excellent activity.

Samantabhadra Bodhisattva points to the realisation that wisdom manifests in practice, and that wisdom only has value to the extent that it benefits all beings.

Everyone is welcome on these Sundays, and they are a good way of getting to know the Abbey if you haven’t visited before. Festivals are a way of celebrating the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and those in our tradition who have pointed the way to the truth. They express, each in their own way, different aspects of the stillness and compassion that lies at the heart of existence.

Please arrive by 10.00am, so we can explain how to join in with the Festival Ceremony which starts at 10.15. There will be a Dharma talk following the ceremony. You are welcome to stay for the informal lunch that follows, but if you would like to, please let us know by midday on the preceding Friday.

July Week Long Sesshin
Jul 20 @ 6:00 pm – Jul 27 @ 1:00 pm

‘Sesshin’ means ‘to search the heart’. This silent retreat with full days of Meditation and teaching led by a senior monk is of great value as an opportunity to step back from our usual concerns and focus on what is important.

Each day there is a chance to ask questions of the monk over tea with all the retreat participants, and there is also the chance to request a private conversation by signing up for Spiritual Guidance.
