principal consciousness (Skt: vijnana; Tib: nam-she)

Synonymous with main mind, one of the two divisions of mind, the other being mental factors; that which is clear and knowing and perceives its object directly, without any conceptual overlay.

There are six main minds, one for each sensory base (eye, ear and so forth) and the mental main mind, which can be either perceptual or conceptual.
