saṃskṛta: Conditioned, compounded.

This applies to anything that bears the characteristics (lakṣaṇa) of arising (utpāda), duration (sthiti), and disappearance (vyaya). The class of conditioned phenomena is contrasted with the ‘unconditioned’ (asaṃskṛta), a synonym for nirvāṇa. Nirvāṇa is regarded as transcendent and not subject to the laws of temporality or causation (pratītya-samutpāda) that affect all phenomena in the conditioned realm of saṃsāra.
