Conqueror of the Threefold World
降三世明王 (Skt Trailokyavijaya; Jpn Gosanze-myo’o)
The wisdom king Conqueror of the Threefold World.
One of the five great wisdom kings.
The wisdom kings are a group of deities revered in Esoteric Buddhism as the conqueror of all obstacles.
The other four of the five great wisdom kings are:
Conqueror of the Threefold World is regarded as either a conqueror of the three poisons of greed, anger, and foolishness, or as a conqueror of the god Maheshvara,
the lord of the threefold world. See also five great wisdom kings.
The wrathful deity Trailokya-vijaya deserves special notice here.
Although not one of the very commonly depicted deities, he appears repeatedly in the Jampa mandalas .
He is "the conqueror of the three worlds," a name signifying his victory over the enemies of the three worlds of the manifested universe:
the celestial, earthly, and infernal realms.
The primary mandala of Jampa has been identified as the Vajrahadatu mandala, whose central deity is Vairocana;
however, Trailokya-vijaya is known as an active or wrathful aspect of Vairocana, and as such he appears in several of the Jampa mandalas. (Trailokya-vijaya is referred to in lines 56-59 of the Jampa Inscriptions: see below.)
His color is blue and he is generally depicted with two of his hands crossed at his breast in the mudra known as vajrahumkara.
Mantra of Trailokyavijaya
The mantra of the goddess Trailokyavijaya is provided by the yuddha-jayarnava tantram.
A somewhat corrupt version of this tantra is incorporated into the agni purana.
Stand-alone manuscripts of the YJA also exist, though they have not been edited or published. In addition to the version of the agni-purana I had access to a hand-written transcript on paper.
The Dutch explorers have recovered a corrupt version of the same in their collection of Hindu mantras known as stuti-s and stava-s from Indonesia (now only surviving in Bali).
All these with a single input from oral tradition help to obtain the critical version of the Trailokyavijaya mantra as per the available traditions.
Trailokyavijaya is meditated upon as being deep blue in color, having 20 hands, and standing on corpses of slaughtered foes.
