Gomyo
護命 (750–834)
A priest of the Dharma Characteristics (Hosso) school in Japan. In 759 he became a disciple of Doko, a priest of the official temple of that school in Mino Province. Thereafter he learned the Consciousness-Only doctrine from Man'yoand Shogu, priests of Gango-ji temple in Nara. He received the precepts from Fa-chin ( Jpn Hasshin) of Toshodai-ji temple, who had come to Japan from China with his teacher Chien-chen (Ganjin). In 818 Dengyo, the founder of the Japanese Tendai school, sought permission from the emperor to construct a Mahayana ordination center on Mount Hiei. The next year Gomyo condemned the project as contrary to the Buddhist teachings in a petition to the throne. He also competed with Dengyo in praying for rain, but lost. In 827 Gomyo was designated administrator of priests by the imperial court.
