Dīrgha Āgama; (Sanskrit). The Long Discourses; one of the major sections of the Sūtra Piṭaka corresponding to the Dīgha Nikāya of the Pāli tradition. Many of the major Eighteen Schools of Early Buddhism had their own versions, although for the most part these have not survived.
As well as recent discoveries of portions of the Sarvāstivāda Dīrgha Āgama in Sanskrit and several sūtras from that tradition in Tibetan translation, a complete version exists in Chinese. This contains 30 sūtras in contrast to the 34 extant in Pāli, and is thought to be Dharmagupta in origin. A comparison of the different versions that survive show an overall high degree of consistency of content with little doctrinal innovation.
