Pūrvaśaila, 'the eastern mountain behind which the sun is supposed to rise. ' M. W. The eastern mountain, name of a monastery east of Dhānyakataka (Amaravati), the 弗婆勢羅僧伽藍 (or 佛婆勢羅僧伽藍) (or 弗媻勢羅僧伽藍) Pūrvaśaila-saṅghārāma. One of the subdivisions of the Mahāsāṅghika school.
