Hōtei ; The well-known seated figure with the large paunch, usually laughing and hence called the Laughing Buddha. Historically derived from Maitreya (q.v.), the Buddha-to-be, through the Chinese form of Mi-lo-Fu, the figure has gradually lost religious significance and has become merely the God of Luck.
