Hui-neng
Hui-neng (638-713): Sixth Chinese Patriarch of Zen school, an incarnation of Vajra Bodhisattva.
In Canton dialect, Wei-lang. In Jap., Enō (637–713). The famous Sixth Patriarch of Chinese Zen Bsm.. the virtual founder of Ch’an
(Zen) Bsm. as a School of its own. His was the ‘Sudden’ school as distinct from the ‘Gradual’ school of Shen-hsiu (q.v.), his fellow
pupil of Hung-jen. The latter soon died out, but both the Rinzai and Sōtō branches of Hui-neng’s School have flourished for a thousand years.
Huineng was the last Zen Patriarch, though many famous Zen Masters followed him. For a trans. by Wong Moulam of the Tan Ching, the
