Temple school
寺門派 ( Jpn Jimon-ha)
Also known as the Temple Order school. A branch of the Tendai school based at Onjo-ji temple in Otsu, Japan. The Temple ( Jimon) school traces its lineage from Chisho (814-891), the fifth chief priest of Enryaku-ji, the head temple of the Tendai school on Mount Hiei. Friction over doctrinal differences between priests in the line of Chisho and those in the line of the third chief priest Jikaku led to a violent dispute over succession after the death of Ryogen, the eighteenth chief priest of Enryaku-ji. In 993 the priests in Chi-sho's line left Enryaku-ji and established themselves at Onjo-ji, where Chi-sho had once been chief priest, founding the Temple school there. In contrast, the Tendai school of Mount Hiei was called the Mountain (Sammon) school.
