Hyakujō ; (Chin., Pai-chang). Zen Master of China (720–814) who founded the Zen (Ch’an) monastic system. Before his time, Zen monks lived in the monasteries of the Vinaya School. Author of the phrase ‘No work, no eating’, he believed in the spiritual value of hard work, and made the whole work of the monastery and its grounds part of the monk’s training.
