Seng-jou
[僧柔] (431–494) (PY Sengrou; Jpn Sonyu)
A priest of Ting-lin-ssu temple at Chien-k'ang, the capital of the Southern Ch'i dynasty in China. Under Hung-ch'eng, who was famed for his knowledge of Buddhist sutras and treatises, Seng-jou studied sutras, practiced meditation, and observed the precepts. Later he lectured on Buddhist sutras and treatises and at the request of Wen Hsüan, a son of Emperor Wu of the Southern Ch'i dynasty, resided at Ting-lin-ssu temple in the capital.
