The seven dharma masters are Nagarjuna (c. 2nd-3rd cent. AD) and Vasubandhu (c 4th cent. AD) of India;

T'an-luan (476-542), Tao-ch'o (562-645) and Shan-tao (613-681) of China;

and Genshin (942-1017) and Honen (1133-1212) of Japan.

These enlightened monks practiced and advocated the nembutsu way (Pure Land Buddhism), and wrote commentaries on the classical scriptures in support of it.
