upadana; Skt., Pali; all attachments that create bonds that bind beings to existence and drive them from rebirth to rebirth. Objects of attachment are constituted by the five skandhas, which are thus often referred to as upadana-skandha. In the context of the chain of conditioned arising ( pratitya-samutpada), attachment or craving ( - trishna) has as its effect “taking possession of a womb and thus instigates the arising of a new existence ( bhava).

The - Abhidharmakosha distinguishes four kinds of upadana-, sensual attachment, attachment to views, attachment to rites and rules, and attachment to belief in an individuality ( anatman).
