wisdom kings
明王 (Skt vidya-raja; Jpn myo’o )

A group of deities said to be capable of destroying all obstacles. Esoteric Buddhism gives them special reverence, depicting them as angry, powerful figures. There are several sets of wisdom kings mentioned in the Buddhist scriptures; these include the five great wisdom kings and the eight great wisdom kings, among others. The five great wisdom kings are Immovable, Conqueror of the Threefold World, Kundali, Great Awesome Virtue, and Diamond Yaksha. The eight great wisdom kings are the five mentioned above plus Ucchushma, Unconquerable, and Horse-Headed. There is also a wisdom king known as Craving-Filled.
