Multitudinous Graceful Actions Sutra
[普曜経] (Skt Lalitavistara; Chin P’u-yao-ching; Jpn Fuyo-kyo )
A biography of Shakyamuni Buddha written from the standpoint of the Mahayana tradition. In this work, The Buddha is pictured as a sublime being who performs supernatural marvels. "Graceful actions" indicates those miraculous deeds of The Buddha. The work describes The Buddha's birth, Renunciation of secular Life, Awakening, preaching of the Law, and so on, up to the time of his return to his home country, Kapilavastu. The Multitudinous Graceful Actions Sutra was translated into Chinese in 308 by Dharmaraksha, a Monk from Tun-huang. Another Chinese version of the Lalitavistara, known as the Correct and Vast Great Adornment Sutra, was translated in 683 by Divakara, a Monk from central India. The Sanskrit text Lalitavistara and a Tibetan translation are also extant.
