Jatson Nyingpo ('ja' tshon snying po) was born in 1585 in Waru, in Kongpo. His father was named Chokyong Gonpo (chos skyong mgon po) and his mother was Namlang Buti (nam langs bu khrid). From the age of twelve until twenty he studied various subjects, including medicine. Then, at the age of twenty, he took


preliminary ordination under Mipam Tashi Lodro (mi pham bkra shis blo gros, 1577-1636), and received the name of Ngawang Chogyel Wangpo (ngag dbang chos rgyal dbang po). He received full ordination from a certain Lhatsewa (lha rtse ba).


Jatson Nyingpo spent seventeen years in retreat, sealing the door of his hermitage with clay. According to his hagiography, while in retreat or soon afterward, at the age of thirty-six, in 1620, he revealed a treasure inventory said to be written in the hand of Yeshe Tsogyel (mtsho rgyal gyi phyag bris ma), and went on to reveal numerous treasure texts, including his best-known cycle, the Konchok Chidu (dkon mchog spyi 'dus), or Embodiment of the Three Jewels, a Guru Rinpoche sadhana which has inspired numerous commentaries.

He is also known under the treasure name Ledro Lingpa (las 'phro gling pa) and the tantric name Ngakchang Humnak Mebar (sngags 'chang hUm nag me 'bar).

Jatson Nyingpo established the monastic center of Bangri Jokpo (bang ri 'jog po), and he served as master to many prominent Nyingma and Kagyu lamas. These included the Tenth Karmapa, Choying Dorje

(karma pa 10 chos dbyings rdo rje. 1610-1674); the Fourth Tsurpu Gyeltsab, Drakpa Dongrub (mtshur phu rgyal tshab 04 grags pa don grub, 1550-1617); the First Drigung Chungtsang, Chokyi Drakpa ('[[bri gung[chung tshang chos kyi grags pa]], 1595-1659); the Fifth Drukchen, Paksam Wangpo ('brug che 05 dpag bsam dbang po,


1593-1641), Dordrak Rigdzin Ngagi Wangpo (rdo brag rig 'dzin ngag gi dbang po, 1580-1639), Tsele Natsok Rangdrol (rtse le sna tshogs rang grol, b. 1608), Lhatson Namkha Jigme (lha btsun nam mkha' 'jigs med, 1597-1650), Rigdzin Trinle Lhundrub (rig 'dzin 'phrin las lhun grub, 1611-1662) and Terton Dudul Dorje (gter ston bdud 'dul rdo rje, 1615-1672).

Jatson Nyingpo died at the age of seventy-two. His Konchok Chidu treasure teaching remains widely practiced among the Nyingma and Kagyu traditions.


Konchod Chidu means “Embodiment of the precious ones.” It’s a practice concentrating on Guru Rinpoche, and it includes all the Three Rootsouter peaceful Padmasambhava as Guru, inner wrathful Padmasambhava as yidam, and secret Padmasambhava in the form of Simhamukha as


Dakini, as well as Padma Wodbhar as the long life form of Padmasambhava. This terma treasure was found by terton Jatson Nyingpo, a reincarnation of Nyongben Tingzin Zangpo, a close student of Padmasambhava, who attained the rainbow body.

Konchog Chidu is a very profound and wide cycle of teachings. Padmasambhava says: If someone even just opens a book of this text, the surroundings become rich and peaceful, and all wars become reduced. If you have

devotion and wish to practice this text, it has the power of giving you the attainment of a pure land, even to an animal. These blessings of this profound teaching have not diminished, and therefore receiving

this teaching is more precious than finding a wish fulfilling jewel. Even if you have doubt about this dharma, or you think that it’s impossible to receive these blessings, your bad karma will be purified and you will enter the path of liberation.


In addition, an individual practitioner who even just holds these teachings in his hands, offers to its deities or listens to these precious teachings, is a son of all Tathagats gone to bliss, and his karmic defilements become pure like a washed white conch. The two accumulations increase like the


stars in the sky. Life, accumulations, bodhichitta mind and wisdom increase limitlessly. When death comes, one can recognize ones own natural state and be liberated in the bardo. There is no question about the benefits if you practice or accomplish this text. These are words of Padmasambhava.”

Padmasambhava says: If someone even just opens a book of this text, the surroundings become rich and peaceful, and all wars become reduced. If you have devotion and wish to practice this text, even if you

are an animal, it helps you to attain a pure land. For the beings of this degenerate time, receiving this precious, unbroken, and blissful teaching is more rare and precious than finding a wish-fulfilling jewel.

An individual practitioner who even just holds these teachings, offers to its deities or listens to these precious teachings, is a son of all Tathagatas gone to bliss, and his karmic defilements become pure like a washed white conch. His two accumulations increase like the stars in the sky. His

life, accumulations, bodhichitta mind and wisdom increase limitlessly. When death comes, one can recognize ones own natural state and be liberated in the bardo. There is no question about the benefits if you practice or accomplish this text. These are words of Padmasambhava.

The Konchok Chidu, or “Gathering of All Precious Jewels”, is a Guru Yoga practice which involves four aspects of Padmasambhava’s activities, and encompasses all Three Roots: the Lama, the Yidam, and

the Kandro, in the forms of Tsokye Dorje, Guru Drakpo, and Senge Dongma Singhamukha, respectively.


Removing harmful influences, generating positive circumstances for the environment and all beings, increasing virtue, and clearing away ignorance are among the beneficial attributes of this extraordinary practice.

The Konchok Chidu tsewang transmits a very direct and powerful connection to Padmasambhava, Guru Rinpoche, who himself says that “receiving this precious, unbroken, and blissful teaching is more rare and precious than finding a wish-fulfilling jewel.”

༄༅། །རིག་འཛིན་འཇའ་ཚོན་སྙིང་པོའི་གསོལ་འདེབས་བཞུགས་སོ། །

Prayer to Rigdzin Jatsön Nyingpo

ཧྲཱིཿ མ་བཅོས་ལྷུན་གྲུབ་ཀ་དག་རང་བྱུང་ལས། །

hrih, machö lhündrub kadak rangjung

Hrīḥ! From self-arising primordial purity and unaltered spontaneous presence

ཅིར་ཡང་འཆར་བའི་རིག་རྩལ་སྒྱུ་འཕྲུལ་ནི།

chiryang charwé riktsal gyutrul ni

You arose as the magical expression of rigpa appearing in any form

གསང་སྔགས་རྙིང་མའི་བསྟན་འཛིན་བང་རི་བ།

sang ngak nyingmé tendzin bang riwa

Bangriwa,1 upholder of the Nyingma teachings of secret mantra

ཨོ་རྒྱན་ལས་འཕྲོ་གླིང་པར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།

དང་པོ་མདོ་རྒྱུད་མན་ངག་ལེགས་པར་སྦྱངས།

Initially, you trained thoroughly in sūtras, tantras and pith instructions;

བར་དུ་བསྐྱེད་རྫོགས་དབྱེར་མེད་བསྒྲུབས་པ་ཚུགས།

bardu kyedzok yermé drubpa tsuk


Then, you accomplished the inseparability of development and completion;


ཡང་དག་དོན་གྱི་རབ་འབྱམས་བང་རི་བ།

yangdak dön gyi rabjam bang riwa

Bangriwa, master of the absolute meaning of reality

རིག་འཛིན་འཇའ་ཚོན་སྙིང་པོར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།

rigdzin jatsön nyingpor solwa deb

Rigdzin Jatsön Nyingpo, to you I pray!


རྒྱལ་དབང་པདྨའི་ཡང་སྤྲུལ་དགེ་སྦྱོང་ཚུལ།

gyalwang pemé yangtrul gejong tsul

Emanation of Padmākara, king of victorious ones, in the form of a monk,


བསྐལ་དུས་སྙིགས་མའི་འགྲོ་བའི་དཔལ་དུ་ཤར།

kaldü nyikmé drowé pal du shar

You appeared as beingssplendour in this time of degeneration,

བདག་འཛིན་རུ་ཏྲ་འཇོམས་པའི་བང་རི་བ།

dakdzin rudra jompé bang riwa

Bangriwa, destroyer of the rudra of ego-clinging

སྔགས་འཆང་ཧཱུྃ་ནག་མེ་འབར་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།

ngakchang hung nak mebar la solwa deb

Ngakchang Hungnak Mebar, to you I pray!


དེ་ལྟར་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པའི་བྱིན་རླབས་ཀྱིས།

detar solwa tabpé jinlab kyi

Through the blessings of praying in this way,

གནས་སྐབས་མཐར་ཐུག་དངོས་གྲུབ་ཆར་འབེབས་ཤིང་།

nekab tartuk ngödrub charbeb shing

May the rain of temporary and ultimate accomplishments shower down,


མཁྱེན་བརྩེ་ནུས་ལྡན་འཇའ་ལུས་འོད་ཕུང་གྱུར།

khyentsé nü den jalü öpung gyur

And may we attain the rainbow body, radiant and endowed with wisdom, compassion and capacity—

བདག་གཞན་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་གཅིག་ཏུ་འགྲུབ་པར་ཤོག

dakshyen kyilkhor chik tu drubpar shok

I and others all together in a single maṇḍala.


ཅེས་རིག་འཛིན་འཇའ་ཚོན་སྙིང་པོའི་གསོལ་འདེབས་འདི་ལ་ཉིན་རེ་ཚར་དྲུག་གམ་ལྔའམ་གསུམ་མམ་ཚར་རེ་མ་ཆག་པར་འདོན་ན་ངན་སོང་གསུམ་དུ་མི་འགྲོ། ཀོང་པོ་གཙང་སྦུག་ཏུ་རིག་འཛིན་འཇའ་ཚོན་སྙིང་པོས་སྦྱར་བའོ། མངྒ་ལཾ།། །།

If you can recite this prayer to Rigdzin Jatsön Nyingpo six, five or even three times a day without interruption, you will never go to the three lower realms. Rigdzin Jatsön Nyingpo wrote this in Kongpo Tsangbuk. Maṅgalaṃ!

volumes known as the Jatson Podrug, this series is volume one and the second largest of the six books. Commonly practiced throughout all of the different traditions and sub-lineages of the Nyingma and Kagyu it is arguably the greatest of Guru Padmasambhava sadhanas. With dozens of adaptations and commentaries written

by the greatest of masters throughout Tibet, Bhutan and even Nepal, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, Karma Chagme Rinpoche, Palpung Situ Pema Nyinje, Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye, Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche

and many more. "Union of the Three Jewels", "Unification of the Three Precious Jewels", "Unification of All Rare and Precious Jewels’’ (Lama Chokyi Nyima); these are some of the other title translations I've seen.[BL]
