Thousand eyed Avalokitesvara

Homage to the lineage gurus of the past, the Triple Jewels of the shrine, and the presiding homa deity, Thousand-armed, Thousand-eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva).
Shimu, fellow vajra masters, senior reverends, reverends, dharma instructors, dharma assistants, chairmen, dharma students, and to all dharma students watching over the internet, may all endeavors be auspicious (applause).
Just now we completed a smooth and auspicious session of Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Homa (applause). We sincerely pray that Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva will emanate magnificent light to fulfill our wishes and bless our endeavors (applause).
We sincerely pray that the luminosity of Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva will shine on each and every sentient being. By her decree, karmic hindrances will be eradicated and all wishes will be granted (applause).
For an unknown number of eons, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has served countless Buddhas. She is an attendant to many Buddhas. She has also pledged a great vow to rescue all sentient beings and liberate myriads of beings.
Despite her strenuous effort, however, one day Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva discovered that there were still countless numbers of sentient beings that needed to be saved. Oddly enough, the number of sentient beings had neither waxed nor waned. There wasnt 急 one more or one less sentient being. How could the number of sentient beings neither increase nor decrease if the Bodhisattva had strived to save so many for so long?
This puzzle can only be solved by someone who is enlightened. At that time, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva could not understand because she had not attained enlightenment yet. It is true that there are Bodhisattvas who have not attained enlightenment yet.
So, after saving innumerable sentient beings for such a long time, even after many kalpas, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva felt that the number of sentient beings were still the same. There was neither an increase nor decrease, not even by one. Why was it like this? Only an enlightened person could answer this question.
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva had been assiduously liberating sentient beings, but yet there were still countless number of beings, so she was very disappointed and frustrated. She was frustrated by the unchanged outcome.
She already devoted a considerable amount time to save sentient beings, yet the number of beings that needed her help had not even decreased by one. So, Avalokitesvara became lax on her effort because she thought that it would not make a difference anyway.
Speaking of liberating sentient beings, what is liberating beings anyway? The so-called sentient beings are not sentient beings. They are not sentient beings so they are sentient beings. Since Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva could not liberate them all, she started to neglect her endeavor.
Nevertheless, in the past she made a solemn vow to perpetually liberate sentient beings and never falter from her aspiration. When she hesitated on her resolve, however, she inadvertently broke the samaya vow. At that moment Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva broke the samaya vow so her head immediately exploded into pieces.
She once made the vow, 戦 vow to continually liberate sentient beings lifetime after lifetime. If I falter even one bit in my resolve, may my head explode into pieces.? Due to this vow, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva旧 head exploded and so did her body. Her head split into ten pieces and her body shattered into powder. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva was 続ing ding? (Chinese slang for death).
During my trip to Taiwan, I saw a pharmacy called Ding Ding Pharmacy on the street. It旧 called Ding Ding. Have you seen Ding Ding Pharmacy (some students reply 谫es?? It旧 a big chain-store pharmacy called Ding Ding Pharmacy. Vajra Master Thubten Dargye told me that everyone will 続ing ding?one day. Does this mean that the Ding Ding Pharmacy is also a 帯ame over?pharmacy (laughter)?
That name was given by [the owner]. What does Ding Ding mean? It appears to imply [[[death]]], which was how Vajra Master Thubten Dargye once explained it to me. Isn急 it strange that a pharmacy would be named Ding Ding? Perhaps, people in that pharmacy know that everyone will 続ing ding?one day (laughter).
Therefore, the head and body of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva totally shattered into pieces and there was nothing left. At that moment, the only one that was capable of rescuing her was the Root Guru of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
So, all together there were eleven heads. Then Amitabha Buddha transformed the broken pieces from her body into one thousand arms and eyes. That was how [[Thousand-armed and Thousand-eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva got her name.
Among all the various forms of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the Six-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva assumed the greatest power and she became known as Thousand-armed, Thousand-eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. How did she become the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva? Due to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva]] 旧 transformation and yogic union with Amitabha Buddha during samadhi, the Six-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva] was able to transform into Thousand-armed and Thousand-eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
Please pay close attention to the practice procedure of the above mentioned deity. Yesterday I taught the practice of Four-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, which included the 臓an,?贈h,?and 昼eh? syllables Sanskrit syllables with Grand Master pronunciation]. The [last syllable] is pronounced 鋳ri-li?in Shingon Buddhism (Japanese Vajrayana), whereas the syllable is pronounced 昼eh?in Tibetan Buddhism. Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva manifests from the transformation of the Sanskrit syllable. Now, let us form the mudra.
Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva surely has a thousand arms and eyes. Look, does this [[[mudra]]] look like a thousand arms and eyes (Grand Master forms the mudra)? This [[[mudra]]] indeed looks like a Thousand-armed, Thousand-eyed Mudra. The thumbs touch each other and the little fingers spread out and point upwards, while the rest of the fingers are interlaced with each other like a thousand arms and eyes. That is the mudra of Thousand-armed, Thousand-eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
Form the mudra, press it on the five points [of your body] (note: the five points refer to the brow chakra, throat chakra, heart chakra, and the left and right shoulders) and then release the mudra on your forehead. One, two, three, four, five, bring it back to the forehead and release it. Now, you have become Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
If time permits, then recite the short mantra:
選amo sam-man-do, moo-toh-nam, wa-ze-la, da-mo, seh.?If time is scarce, then recite the heart mantra: 巣a-ze-la, da-mo, seh. Wa-ze-la, da-mo, seh.?That is the heart mantra of Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. 巣a-ze-la, da-mo, seh. Wa-ze-la, da-mo, seh.?So, recite it like this.
If you have already employed the mudra, mantra, and visualization, as well as touched the five points with the mudra, then how can Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva not descend? Why has the deity not merged into your body? Today, I underwent the same experience.
Everytime I conduct a homa, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva or any other deity merges into my body without a moment of hesitation (applause). But, what about today? It took about three or four minutes to invoke Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva to unite with me.
Perhaps Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva was busy helping others (laugher). So, it took a good three or four minutes to invoke her to unite with me. What if she doesn急 come?
My secret was to rub my two thumbs against each other, which definitely made her come. It took about three or four minutes for her to show her power. Her power was shown by uniting with Grand Master. It was a successful homa (applause).
We have learned that Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva possesses a thousand arms and eyes, and she is the union of Amitabha Buddha and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. I have emphasized the importance of yogic union in tantric practice, which is the most critical step.
The next step is transformation. For example, Padmasambhava is the lineage guru of the Vajrayana tradition. Padmasambhava is the body of Shakyamuni Buddha, Padmasambhava is the speech of Amitabha Buddha, and Padmasambhava is the mind of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
This kind of birth resulted from a transformation, which generated even greater power. Through the spiritual union of Manjushri Bodhisattva and Lord Yama, that union and transformation become more potent.
Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, who is the union of Amitabha Buddha and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, is a highly-respected Buddha. She has eleven heads, which represents the ten levels of a Bodhisattva, from the primary level to the tenth level. [The eleventh head] is the highest level representing enlightenment, which is tantamount to the attainment of a Buddha.
All Buddhas have reached the eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteen, fifteenth, and sixteen levels. Bodhisattvas at the eleventh level are the enlightened Bodhisattvas, and Bodhisattvas below the tenth level are Bodhisattvas.
Therefore, Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara truly possesses inconceivable power. If you engage in her practice, you will receive a lot of benefits. Later on, you will receive the empowerment of Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara. Are you aware of the advantages of Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara practice?
6. She can extends one旧 life span and bless one with longevity.
7. She can fulfill the wishes of sentient beings. She can grant what you have just wished for.
8. She is unhindered and has self-mastery. She is unrestrained and has omnipotence.
9. She can subjugate all misfortunes.
10. If one can only cultivate to the primary level of a Bodhisattva or the heavenly level, then one can skip many levels when one unites with Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara . Suddenly, one is at full speed and one can immediately jump to the tenth level from the primary level. One can leap over the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and the tenth levels, and excel directly to the eleventh level, which is equalvent to the level of a Buddha.
The Great Compassion Dharani that we chant is recited as follows, 選amo Thousand-armed, Thousand-eyed Vast and Perfect Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Dharani.
We have mentioned Ding Ding (Ding Ding Pharmacy). Ding Ding is death. There was a foreign student who traveled overseas for the first time. He was from the countryside, so his mother gave him a personal rice cooker to use in America.
After boarding, he started to think about his first-time studying abroad in America and also thought about the farewell with his mother at the airport. He could not help it and broke down into tears as a result. Very soon, his face was streaming with tears.
A middle-aged man, who was unaware of what was going on, saw the young man holding something and crying nonstop, so he kindly comforted him and said, 窃on急 be too sad.
What exactly is enlightenment?
That is considered to be the union. Shakyamuni Buddha attained realization under the bodi tree, but his realization was inconceivable to the laypeople. Many people have been sending me notes to indicate their realization and they say that there is no being, no sentient beings, and no self. Is this what enlightenment is? No.
Professor Zhu commented, 選o substance, no being, no Buddha, no Bodhisattva, no nothing, and everything does not exist.?Everyone旧 realization is quite similar, whether they wrote an article or a few sentences. The emptiness that Professor Zhu explained is not the same as the teaching of Shakyamuni Buddha. Don急 be confused. Someone wrote that the so-called enlightenment is not enlightenment. I almost fainted when I heard this.
In that case, what of Shakyamuni Buddha? What of enlightenment? On the contrary, the so-called non-enlightenment is enlightenment. When you don急 contemplate on enlightenment, then you are enlightened. In that case, all students have already reached enlightenment then!
If this is the case, then why did I need to reward people with the dharma king robe? Since I have so many of them, I might as well give more away. Why don急 I give everyone a robe? It is not that. If you can truly understand what Shakyamuni Buddha realized, you will win my respect.
It doesn急 matter. The truth is the truth. The first time he wrote the realization note to me I said, 戦 say no?(Grand Master spoke in English). He sent me another one and I said, 戦 say no.?The third time I said, 戦 say no.?
The fourth time, 戦 say no.?The fifth time, 戦 say no.?All no, no, no, and no. They were all negative. Finally, he came to a central point and I pushed him more and asked, 聴hat is beyond that? What is it? What is beyond what you have written??Eventually, he attained enlightenment (applause).
I used the 断ush strategy.?I pushed everyone?pushed, pushed, pushed, pushed, and pushed them towards the emptiness.
Many realization notes have failed. All of you have talked about no being, no thought, no realization, no cultivation, no receiving, and everything is 嘆o.?That is not sensible. I am looking for the kind of emptiness that was realized by the Buddha. No, no, I have to push you to get to the bottom of it and ask, 聴hy is that??
Enlightenment is not an easy feat. Once you have achieved realization, you then have to see the revelation of Buddha-nature. Only when you can see your true Buddha-nature will it be regarded as an accomplishment. Enlightenment alone is not sufficient. You still need to practice upon becoming enlightened. After enlightenment, you have to apply what you have realized. This is called 断racticing upon enlightenment.?
In fact, everyone has greed. I will give an example which was originally told to me by Shimu.
The dean asked, 巣hat are you going to do with those worms??The patient replied, 荘hese worms want to eat leaves, so I am going to bring the worms to their food.?
The dean took a look and sure enough, the patient found some leaves for the worms. That was the first time. The second time, the patient with the worms passed by the dean again and the dean asked, 巣hat is it this time??The patient answered, 荘he worms want to eat bills.
They want to eat money. I have to find some money to feed them.?The dean was curious, so he looked at the patient again. The patient did indeed find some money to feed the worms. The dean found the incident quite odd. The third time, the dean saw the person with the worms again.
The dean wondered, 巣hat do the worms want to eat this time??The patient uttered, 荘he worms have a great appetite. They want to eat diamonds.?
Immediately the dean stood up, 戦 am going with you this time?(laughter). If the patient found some diamonds to feed the worms, then the dean would definitely rob the diamonds from him. That is sheer greed. Everyone is greedy by nature, and the dean of the hospital is not an exception.
There is another story on the subject of greed. This kind of greed is a bit 塚uck?(Grand Master spoke in English). There was once a boy who was very attached to his mother. Every night, he insisted on sleeping with his mother.
His father who was nearby replied, 声h, you are young but you are so thoughtful already. Good little boy!?That is also greed (laughter).
Even though we have all embarked on our pursuit of Buddhism, the thoughts of avarice still inevitably arise. When thoughts of avarice are engendered, we should regard them as deluded and unwholesome thoughts.
You shouldn急. If you have desire for fame, then all of your energy will be directed towards fame. Let fame or wealth take its own course. If other sentient beings desire fame, money, money-making opportunities, then let them go with the flow.
That way I can occupy and expand my territory.?Arguments and friction will come along with those territories, which should be avoided. If people invite you, then you can go with the flow.
That is totally fine. However, if people don急 invite you and you say, 装ou should invite me or else I will cast a voodoo spell on you. I will cast voodoo upon you. I will make you pay for it!?then that is not righteous. Let things happen naturally.
The most important task for a cultivator is to unite with the personal deity, to unite as one entity. We will all 続ing ding?one day. We will all depart from the world one day. An enlightened person will think, 巣hat really belongs to me? Nothing belongs to me.?
We are all old already. Our [[[True Buddha School]]] masters have become seniors. The young generation should take over. Those of us who are sixty-five or above are seniors and we should plan for our retirement.
Grand Master is sixty-five, sixty-five according to the Chinese calendar, and sixty-three and half according to the Western calendar, so that is almost time for retirement. Grand Master has never said that any temple or chapter belongs to him (applause).
If I did, then I would be walking on air. The temple is worth approximately a few billion [[[Wikipedia:Taiwanese people|Taiwanese]]] dollars and it is a huge temple. Master Lianzhe can vouch for me. Just the land alone is vast, not to mention the temple. Many plots of land were purchased for it.
The pillar [of the temple] is so daunting. It takes several people with their arms extended to form a circle around it. If it was made from cake, I would bite it and not let go of it. If you can訷 bite it, can訷 move it, and can訷 store it in your safety deposit box, then what is yours? One day, you will 続ing ding.?
I just lodge at the temple. Master Lianyin has even lived at the Rainbow Lei Zang Temple longer than I have. Master [Lianyin]], how long have you been sleeping at the Rainbow Temple? 17 years? He has slept there for 17 years.
I have not even slept there for half a year. I never considered the Rainbow Temple to be my home. I just lodge there. When it is time for me to 続ing ding,?then I will leave.
If you walk by this particular one, the first line reads, 装ou are stepping over my head?(laughter). The second line continues, 戦 advise you not to sleep so much when you are alive. Don急 be like me.
Actually, they are not aware that when they 続ing ding?they will sleep forever. There was more on the bottom [of the tombstone] which read, 装ou do not need to come looking for me, I will come to you ?(laughter). 戦 will update you with my new email address?(laughter).
Everyone should inscribe [the box] with the following words, �Grand Master旧 Territory,?with a big [[[Wikipedia:Chinese|Chinese]]] character 争huang?[蓣onderful?in Chinese]. Then, everything will be happily ever after (applause).
So touching. We shouldn 急 be so busy when our time comes. When you were alive, you were so busy writing already so at the moment of your departure, you shouldn急 have bothered jotting down a verse. That is the last thing you want to be bothered with. No need then. When it is time for Grand Master to go I will just utter, 昼 huang (laughter).?
Today, I have finally touched on the subject of territory. My territory belongs within that small box. That is my permanent residence. If the temple doesn急 get listed for sale, I can rest forever in that box.
Sold means sold. Then, I will have no territory. That is also great (applause)!
Remember, when there is no trace of greed, hatred, jealousy, envy, arrogance, ignorance, and stupidity in your heart, you will be able to merge with the personal deity and attain enlightenment (applause)!
Following today旧 discourse, you should completely remove the habitual seeds of greed, hatred, ignorance, and then your Buddha-nature will definitely be revealed. You will surely go directly to the supreme land and attain Buddhahood instantly (applause).
